Who doesn’t like the smell of freshly baked bread in the morning. Some companies have made it their living to give people this marvelous sensation. Mass production of freshly baked bread, however, is quite different from the ordinary kitchen process.
Ingredients are often having different units of measure (UOM), and perhaps each recipe is introducing different UOMs for the same ingredients. This creates a variety of UOM conversions that needs to be handled properly. This could be handled seamlessly in your BI solution. By accounting for UOM conversions, and having a dimension dedicated for UOMs, you can use conversion factors to switch between a variety of UOMs freely. This way you ensure that you are comparing apples to apples, and avoid misinterpreting you data and end up with bad decisions, false assumptions etc.
